Subject–Verb Agreement
Find the subject, then choose the verb that matches it.
Core rules
- He, she, it or one name: the present simple verb usually adds -s or -es. My brother walks to school.
- I, you, we and they use the base verb. I like mangoes. You run fast.
- A plural -s on a noun is not a verb -s. The birds sing. The bird sings.
- Be: I am; he, she, it is; you, we, they are. Past: was and were.
- He, she, it take has and does. Does and doesn't are followed by the base verb: she doesn't like, not doesn't likes.
- Most past verbs are the same for every subject: they visited, Ali visited.
Challenge rules
- Tom and Sam are in the same class.
- The box of pencils is on the desk: match the head noun.
- Everyone sings. Each pupil has a name tag.
- There is a cat. There are three cats.
- The water is cold. My homework is finished.
- The children are in the hall. People wait in queues.
- Kumar can swim: can, must and should take the base verb.
