Upper-primary fractions and ratios

The Branch Method

Learn to represent a multi-step word problem as a conditional nested fraction tree. Each new fraction or ratio applies to the group reached on the branch above it, rather than always applying to the original whole.

Build and follow the branches

  • Convert a ratio into a fraction of the combined group before adding it to the tree.
  • Use a complement to find the fraction or ratio groups that remain.
  • Follow the required path and multiply its fractions to find the target fraction of the whole.

Work forwards or backwards

When the whole is known, multiply along the path to find the target count. When a leaf count is given instead, reverse the path operations to work back to the whole.
